National policy identifies the role that local development plans play in protecting the countryside and establishes the principle that planning policies should take account of the impact that development can have on landscape quality. Visual and Landscape Impact Assessments have become a statutory requirement of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and a visual and landscape impact assessment will form part of this. For example, large scale developments such as wind farms, landfill sites and large industrial proposals will require an EIA.
