Nesting Birds Survey Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire

Our nesting bird surveys in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk and the M25 corridor have seen a recent addition to the team. Darwin, a German Shorthaired Pointer is used by Greenwillows to (carefully and from a distance) reliably show where ground nesting birds have taken up residence. Ground nesting birds are protected along with all other wild birds by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) and using Darwin in our bird surveys allows Greenwillows’ ornithologists to create minimum disturbance to the birds during our work in addition to his ability to cover large areas of ground very accurately and at a faster speed than human surveyors. This obviously has a knock-on effect in lowering the cost for our clients as the work can be carried out at maximum efficiency, reducing the time surveyors need to be on-site.

In recent survey work, our ecologists came across an active blackbirds nest.  We were able to advise the client developer how to work around the nest without holding up construction whilst avoiding distress to the birds. Damage/destruction of an active nest or eggs can attract fines of up to £5,000.00 per nest or egg and/or 6 months imprisonment plus confiscation of the machinery used to commit the offence, and it is imperative to carry out work around nesting birds or breeding pairs sensitively to work within legislation.
